Meet Carlos Rubio, Underwriting Trainee, Sompo Pro

What is your backstory? Tell us about your path to Sompo International.

I graduated from my university with degrees in Risk Management & Insurance and International Business. My first step into the insurance industry was my internship at Lloyd’s of London, where I had the opportunity to meet professionals in the industry from all over the world, as well as learning more about all the different career paths that this industry has to offer. When I returned to the U.S, I began my underwriting internship at Sompo International with the Sompo Pro team in the Chicago office. The internship program provided me hands-on underwriting experience in Professional Lines and Cyber Insurance, while working on different accounts and taking on various projects that helped me gain a deeper understanding on our team’s appetite and underwriting guidelines. One of my favorite parts of the program was the big emphasis on developing relationships. I had the opportunity to network with our partners in multiple occasions while grabbing lunch, coffee, or watching the Cubs lose at Wrigley! I truly enjoyed the relationship aspect and its importance to succeed in this industry. Lastly, I learned that Sompo truly cares about developing and retaining their talent, as many of the interns, including myself, received offers and were given the opportunity to begin our careers at Sompo in the midst of a Pandemic.

What do you think makes Sompo International unique?

We have an outstanding collaborative culture that creates a positive and energetic work environment, which motivates us to offer creative and sustainable solutions for our partners. Since starting my career at Sompo, I have had the opportunity to work and learn from some of the most knowledgeable, creative, driven, and respectful professionals I have ever met. The people and their energy are what make Sompo International a unique company to be a part of.

What advice would you give to upcoming or recent graduates looking to break into the industry?

The insurance industry is a hidden gem among all industries. It provides a secure career path in many different disciplines with countless of opportunities for growth and success. No matter what you majored in, there is a career path in this industry that suits your passions and goals. Lastly, this is a relationship-based industry, strive to be a part of the solution and not the problem, and most importantly, always treat people with respect and honesty.

What has it been like starting your career in the midst of a pandemic?

More than anything, I am thankful to be part of a company, that even in the midst of a pandemic, is rapidly growing and continues to bring in more talent. Although my team and I are currently working remotely, they have been extremely supportive of my development as an underwriter and have always made themselves available whenever I have questions about our underwriting guidelines, appetite or the industry.

What do you do when you’re not working?

I spend as much time as I can with my family and close friends, especially during these difficult times. I also love travelling and experiencing different cultures. This passion of mine began when I moved to the U.S. when I was 14 years old. Ever since, I have taken any opportunity to travel, allowing me to see different places and meeting new people from all over the world. I also enjoy going to concerts, the outdoors, and hiking.

Last words – anything else you’d like us to know?

Do not be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and always approach every opportunity with a “Yes” mentality. No matter how small an opportunity may seem, you will never know how far it can take you or what other doors will open for you unless you take it.
