Deirdre Martin – SVP, U.S. Commercial Management Liability
What is your backstory? Tell us about your path to Sompo International.
I was drawn to Sompo International’s strong history of attracting and retaining market- respected professionals known for collaboration. I show up each day – virtually – to be a valued contributor within a Financial Lines team that is sincerely appreciated for providing solutions in the market.
I have a unique story in that I joined the organization just two days before the COVID-19 pandemic sent us into a virtual working environment. But the lack of an office did not hinder my assimilation as a member of the team. It has been a seamless transition thanks to the support of not just my Underwriting colleagues, but across Claims, Product, Human Resources, Communications and in our leadership. We are hiring and growing amidst a pandemic and I hope to be able to provide the same welcome to our newest colleagues under these circumstances.
What is something about your role / business unit that people may not know?
I truly value the way we all go about our workday, balancing analytics and strategy with levity and banter. There are definitely more laughs than complaints day to day.
What is a trend you feel is impacting the industry at the moment?
The growing commitment to the need for a more diverse, inclusive and evolving talent pipeline is going to be one of the strongest impacts to our industry overall. I applaud a commitment to ensure that the decision making over the long-term comes from a wider lens and these efforts will greatly contribute to the health and sustainability we all strive for in risk transfer.
Last words – anything else you’d like us to know?
I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be part of the growth that Sompo International is committed toward. I am also grateful to participate in industry organizations such as PLUS (the Professional Liability Underwriting Society) and the Bridge (an inclusive network that generates connections among Financial lines professionals with the goal of advancing women in order to increase the number of diverse colleagues in senior roles). In both organizations, I have the opportunity to work with industry leaders I admire, peers I respect and reconnect with many of the valued friends I have been fortunate to know over the years, while at the same time encourage and advocate for the talent that will be the next leaders in Financial Lines.
