Meet Jake Musgrove, Assistant Vice President – E&S Property
Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo.
When searching for a summer internship my junior year of college, I met a recruiter from Endurance at a career fair and ended up taking a job with the E&S Casualty Department. That role led to the introductions that landed me with the E&S Property Department the next summer as an Underwriting Trainee. Little did I know, seven years later I’d be with the same company through an acquisition that fueled immense growth. When I look back at where we were when I started in 2015, compared to where Sompo is now, it’s truly astounding how much the company has scaled in such a short amount of time. I think my progression here speaks to how dedicated this company is to investing in its employees’ growth and development, and I’m glad I’ve had the opportunity to start my career here.
What advice do you have for prospective Sompo candidates?
The best way to stand out and progress in your career is to take initiative in your everyday role. Be someone who solves problems or suggests solutions, rather than someone who waits to be told to act.
Tell us about an initiative at Sompo that you are most excited for in 2022.
Our unit recently deployed an AI-driven submission triage tool that I have had the opportunity to help build. We receive over 35,000 submissions a year, so it’s crucial that we find a way to service more submissions in an efficient manner. This tool aids in that task, by pulling relevant data points from prospective business from the moment it’s submitted, and then compiling that data so underwriters can utilize it to triage deals more efficiently. I’m excited to see how far we can take this project, and for the opportunities it will present to our team.
What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
My perfect day starts with an outdoor activity like golf, fishing, or going to the beach, and ends with a nice dinner with family or friends.
