Meet Alex D. Smith, ARM, AIC, AVP, Claims Account Manager
Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo.
After graduating from the University of Memphis in 1992, I had my sights toward a career in investment banking. However, God had a different plan in mind, insurance. Right out of college I was offered a position in claims with a major national carrier. I was the first new-hire in almost four years and this was beginning of my journey in the industry. I was on the fast-track within the company leading to launching my own agency. However, with a growing family I decided to stay in the realm of commercial claims. While managing large accounts with Royal Sun Alliance, someone took notice of my work ethic and professionalism and thought I would be a great fit as a Claim Account Executive with a newly created joint venture between Sompo and Royal Sun Alliance, SJA Agency LLC. Now 20 years later, it has been an extraordinary journey to see this organization transform into becoming a global leader in the industry in addition to working with many professionals who are driven to exceed the service expectations of our valued clients.
What advice do you have for prospective Sompo candidates?
When purchasing a diamond, there are four C’s that one should consider: Carat, Color, Clarity, and Cut. Prospective Sompo candidates should also consider four C’s: Commitment, Character, Clarity, and Calmness. Commitment to see things through; character that drives toward doing the higher moral good; clarity of mind to stay focused during challenging times; and calmness because change is a part of life.
Tell us about an initiative at SI that you are most excited for in 2022.
I am extremely excited about our distinct opportunity to broaden the One Sompo Brand by optimizing our combined talents and capabilities in becoming the global leader in the insurance industry.
What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
Insurance by design is the minimization of risk and the protection loss. A perfect day outside of the office for me is to maximize all the risk I can (within reason). Whether it is skydiving from thirteen thousand feet, angling for the largest fish in the ocean, or riding the tallest rollercoaster, thrill seeking is my passion. I am blessed to enjoy these thrilling experiences with my family who makes every day perfect!
