Meet Devin Burns, AVP, Catastrophe Risk Manager
Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo.
I joined the industry in the beginning of 2010, after a former colleague suggested my interests and skills aligned with various insurance roles. I interviewed and accepted a position as a Catastrophe Modeler for the global carrier, Allianz. Once I joined, I was hooked. I spent the next five years learning and growing into successive roles within the Catastrophe Modeling team. Working primarily on the large property book, I developed relationships with a group of knowledgeable and highly skilled Underwriters. It was during this time I decided to seize an opportunity to move into an Underwriting role. After spending a few years on the Underwriting side, I decided to pivot back to Catastrophe Analytics. My experience in Underwriting provided such a unique perspective. I was determined to blend my experiences in Modeling and Underwriting to elevate quality of service and support. It was with this mission that I was presented with an opportunity to join Sompo. Since joining, my mission has remained to provide best-in-class modeling and analytics to all business unit clients I support.
What advice do you have for prospective Sompo candidates?
Sompo is truly a unique company. The talent sourced is consistently of top quality and we are lucky to work day in and day out with some of the best in the industry. Allow yourself to take some time to be studious outside of your individual function.
Tell us about an initiative at SI that you are most excited for in 2022.
One Sompo is a very exciting initiative. Coming together in new and different ways throughout the organization provides so many opportunities for us all to expand our networks and perspectives.
What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
My perfect day outside of the office would include treating myself out to coffee and breakfast, followed by exploring somewhere new. I love traveling, so any opportunity to explore a new area, different country, or be immersed in an unfamiliar culture, I am in.
