Meet Kenta Tezen, Executive Officer, Commercial Business Strategy and Underwriting Department, Sompo Japan Insurance Inc.
Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo Japan.
Back in 1997, I joined Sompo Japan after graduating from college. Initially, I was assigned to a commercial sales division and spent nine years there. In 2006, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to study at Keio Business School, with Sompo’s corporate sponsorship, and earned my MBA. After that, I experienced sales planning, corporate planning and then became a general manager at Ehime branch, covering the entire Ehime prefecture. Later, in 2021, I worked directly for the president of Sompo Japan. Since April 2022, I have been overseeing the commercial underwriting department at Sompo Japan as a general manager/executive officer.
Why do you work? What is the purpose in your work?
I like to see people’s happy faces. Just a simple thing such as health, peace and time with family is what I wish for myself and the people in our society.
In the same way, I’d like to mitigate people’s grief or losses from accidents or disasters and help them recover quickly when they suffer. To achieve this, I need my job. My interaction with society is primarily through work, and my work helps me amplify my contribution to society. With Sompo Japan, I continue striving to realize a society in which people can live a healthy, prosperous and happy life in one’s own way.
Tell us about an initiative at Sompo Japan that you are most excited for in 2022.
This year in May, Sompo Japan started the proof of concept to sell its insurance products and services on a metaverse platform, which one of the two major air carriers in Japan is planning to launch this winter. Expecting exponential growth of the commercial activities on metaverse, Sompo Japan is set to pursue solutions for newly arising risks and to adapt to the changes in the insurance purchasing behaviors. Aiming to become a front runner in the world of Web 3.0, I will continue to put my efforts into this goal.
What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
A day in a forest resort with my wife, dog and friends. Even better if there is a hot spring nearby.
