Meet Satoshi Komizo, General Manager, Reinsurance – Sompo Japan Insurance Inc.
Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo Japan.
I joined Yasuda F&M in 1994 right after graduating from university. Although the company name has changed since, I have been working for Sompo in various roles and countries for 28 years. I joined the Overseas Reinsurance department as an assumed Reinsurance underwriter in 1999 and was appointed Director for Sompo Japan Reinsurance Hong Kong in 2003. In this role, I wrote assumed reinsurance business in Asia, before going back to Japan in 2005, where I handled Property, Casualty and Marine outward treaties for Sompo Japan. I then moved to Charlotte, NC, where I handled reinsurance as Vice President for U.S. Operations and Property Underwriting for Sompo America as Vice President. In 2016, I returned to Japan and moved into a role within Overseas Reinsurance at Sompo Holdings, where I was primarily responsible for the transfer of assumed reinsurance to Sompo. Since 2018, I have been overseeing outward/assumed treaties for Sompo Japan Insurance.
Why do you work? What is the purpose in your work?
Through applying my Reinsurance experience and knowledge, I want to positively contribute to alleviating the increasing uncertainty for people, our organization and the world we live in. During this time of turbulence and volatility, I believe reinsurance can play a key role in addressing new risks such as climate change.
Tell us about an initiative at Sompo that you are most excited for in 2022.
I’m excited about Sompo’s efforts to become one organization and believe Reinsurance will be a key driver in making this happen—in 2022 and beyond. Sompo Japan’s Reinsurance team is collaborating closely with Sompo and all related entities globally to effectively use synergies and work together as one global team.
What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
I enjoy spending whole days playing golf with friends, and sometimes even join amateur golf championships.
