Sompo Spotlight Series: Meet Toshinobu Kondo, General Manager, Office of Group CFO, Sompo Holdings Inc.

November 10, 2022

As part of our Sompo Spotlight Series, we have started featuring colleagues from our parent company, Sompo Holdings, and Sompo Japan, the domestic P&C company, to introduce our people and businesses to each other and share our experiences across geographies, functions and work levels.

Meet Toshinobu Kondo, General Manager, Office of Group CFO, Sompo Holdings Inc.

Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo Holdings.
I am currently working in the Group CFO office at Sompo Holdings, where I’m mainly in charge of the financial support of the group, including capital policy, enterprise risk management and investment. My role is very exciting and allows me to be able to experience Sompo’s dynamic activities firsthand.

After graduating from university in Tokyo in 1997, I joined the Yasuda Fire & Marine Insurance Company (now Sompo Japan Insurance) and started my career as a relationship manager in the Consumer Sales division. Although I have been with Sompo Japan for 25 years, my career path wasn’t straight. I have served as policy researcher at a think tank in Washington D.C., investment manager in strategic holding equities and Fixed Income in the Investment division, financial products planner and sales representative at an asset management firm, before moving on to planning and developing business strategy and evolving corporate culture within Sompo Japan’s Corporate Planning department.

My career path might seem unique and inconsistent, but Sompo has offered me a very broad range of development opportunities while steadily developing my ability to look at the business from a bird’s eye view.

It is my objective to contribute to enhancing Sompo’s corporate value by applying my diverse skillset and unique experience while focusing on Corporate Finance.

Why do you work? What is the purpose in your work?
Enjoying life with my family comes first. Secondly, I want to transform Sompo together with my creative colleagues and grow with Sompo.

Tell us about an initiative at Sompo that you are most excited for in 2022.
There are so many meaningful initiatives going on every day that it’s hard to choose. The “Project to Build a Conglomerate Premium” has started this year. It has deepened discussions between investment teams across all business units, which is very impressive. As an individual, it has been a great experience to meet and learn from many of the financial leaders across industries through the “Hitotsubashi Financial Leadership Program” (HFLP) that I attended from 2021 to 2022.

What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
Camping with my family outdoors and relaxing with a cup of coffee.
