Meet Paul Burgess, SVP, Global Head of Multinational Claims
Please tell us about your career journey and your path to Sompo
I joined Sompo in January 2022, having spent just over 32 years in the insurance industry, working in Multinational Claims. Like most people, I had no intention of joining the insurance industry – until I did a week’s work experience in 1989 for a Lloyd’s broker. The week was mostly spent in various establishments other than the office. My first job was as a Claims Technician for a Lloyd’s syndicate, where claims were advised on punch cards and recorded in manual loss books – how times have changed! From Lloyd’s, I joined the company market, holding various leadership positions in insurance and reinsurance at the Hartford and RSA, including Chairman of British Aviation Company for five of the 17 years I spent at RSA. I am currently a committee member of both, the IUA Claims Strategy Committee and of ARIAS UK.
What advice do you have for prospective Sompo candidates?

What is your idea of a perfect day outside of the office?
My wife and I watching Harlequins play rugby, followed by a celebratory meal.
